A ventricular septal defect (VSD) is characterized by a hole in the wall (septum) that separates the two lower chambers of the heart. This condition can lead to increased blood flow to the lungs, and while it may cause some degree of heart failure or increased respiratory problems, it does not typically result in significant cyanosis (a bluish discoloration of the skin due to low oxygen levels).

In contrast, conditions such as Tetralogy of Fallot, Transposition of the Great Arteries, and Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome all lead to impaired oxygenation of the blood. In these cases, oxygen-poor blood is shunted into systemic circulation, resulting in the characteristic cyanosis commonly associated with these conditions. As a result, when assessing for cyanotic heart defects, the presence of a VSD is not classified as a cyanotic defect compared to the other listed conditions.
